Allergic rhinitis is the sixth most common chronic illness. Recent estimates have determined that 10% to 30% of adults and up to 40% of children have allergic rhinitis (US Dept of Health and Human Services. AHRQ, Pub No 02-E023, May 2002). This may not be an accurate estimation because many patients do not go to their doctor for treatment but rely on over-the-counter treatment and advice of their pharmacists to manage their symptoms. Over the past 30 years there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in developed countries. Theories for this increased prevalence abound, including the hygiene hypothesis (Strachan DP:BMJ 1989;299:1259-60), environmental factors, and others. The good news is that current therapeutic options do improve the quality of life and allow patients to control their symptoms and reduce the impact of allergic rhinitis on their lifestyles.
